California Certified Organic Farmers

XDOOCCO

CLIENT: CCOF

As the organic movement faces an evolution, CCOF, California’s leading organic certifier, a pioneer in the organic movement, approached us to document their organic roadmap stakeholder meetings, [hydroponic, briefly], and leadership team headshots.

CCOF is a cornerstone of the organic movement — an organization that has defined the standards of integrity for California agriculture for decades. It has been a privilege to serve as a literary and visual documentarian for their team, helping to translate their complex, vital work into a narrative that is as grounded and aesthetic as the farms they certify.

We brought a lens and voice to the narrative that respected the soil-first pioneers while making room for future-focused conversations. I was commissioned to provide the deep-dive research, investigative writing, and original photography to document this pivotal moment in agricultural history.

When they began developing standards for hydroponic organic certification, they faced a complex challenge.

Client: CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers)

  • By handling the research, the writing, and the photography, Wolf Peach provided a unified voice across several key initiatives:

    • Investigative Journalism: A six-month deep dive into the history and future of the "H-word" (hydroponics), tracing agricultural lineages from ancient chinampas to modern innovation for an 8-page feature in Certified Organic magazine.

    • The Organic Roadmap: On-the-ground documentation of stakeholder summits, witnessing the collaboration between farmers, scientists, and policy leaders as they cultivate the next era of organic stewardship.

    • Leadership Portraiture: A suite of environmental headshots for the CCOF leadership team, designed to reflect the professional authority and down-to-earth authenticity of the people guiding the movement.

  • Project: Out of the Soil: Organic and the "H-word"

  • Services: Investigative Journalism, 6-Month Primary Research, Documentary Photography, Field Interviews

  • Scope: 8-Page Feature Article for Certified Organic Magazine.

On behalf of our client CCOF, we explored this city/country mashup in the context of a campaign about hydroponics (a divisive one in the organic world). Our goal was to re- assess the way we see and discuss this topic. Our method was one part journalism, one part photo ethnography, and two parts research and interviews. Here is a sample of our final product.
